A prototype racing game you can drive anywhere in the world, built on Google Maps' 3D world.
The Google Maps Driving Game is a single-player prototype racing game played on Google Maps' 3D model of the real world, so in theory you could drive around your own town or anywhere else on the planet. Racing your friends was the idea for later. As Ollie put it when he shared it: "Imagine being able to drive around your hometown with all of your friends, a racing game which covers the whole world."
He built it over a weekend in Unity, using Google's then-new Geospatial API so that everything sits on the world mesh the API generates. The prototype has realistic driving physics, traffic and weather, and uses a bird's-eye camera because of the quality of that mesh.
Ollie posted a clip on X in May 2023. It picked up more than 12,700 likes and 1.5 million views, and Hitmarker covered it as the "Google Maps Driving Simulator". The game stayed a prototype and was never released.
