Euronews profiled Ollie as the designer of the viral crying filter.
"Crying on TikTok: Meet Ollie Tyler, the designer of the viral social media filter" is a profile of Ollie by Jonny Walfisz, published in the culture section of Euronews on 26 December 2022 and syndicated on Yahoo News. Euronews reached out to Ollie after his crying filter went viral.
The piece traces the sad eyes filter back to a clip from The Story of Tracy Beaker and quotes Ollie on how it came together: he already had the sound, and sourced the visual from Brendan Fraser crying. It follows his route from managing brand campaigns for major clients to making his own AR filters, starting with "yes or no" filters, and on to working full-time on filters and creative technology, splitting his time between the UK and the US.
Ollie shares what he has learned: tie filters to trends and sounds, because TikTok "really is a platform of trends", and aim for the seven-second mark. He explains why he avoids beauty and body dysmorphia filters. The article also covers tnySocial, a platform for brands to build their own randomiser filters without a dedicated developer, and Tapaday, "a tiny 60 second mini game every single day".

I'm a creative technologist with 10+ years in AR. My filters have been viewed more than 32 billion times across TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, and I'm a Snapchat ambassador. Through my company, tnySocial, I build custom apps, games and AR for artists, influencers and brands, made to fit their brand and their audience. Before that I built AR campaigns at Zappar and led AR development at Poplar Studio. From London, based in Los Angeles.
