Crying Eyes is the TikTok effect behind the "Just Hay Fever" trend. It puts exaggerated, tearful crying eyes over your own. Ollie published it in January 2022, and it was the first crying-eyes effect used for the trend, in which people lip-synced a clip from The Story of Tracy Beaker where Tracy insists she isn't crying, it's "just hay fever", to act out sad moments they had hidden or played down.
Ollie designed and built the effect himself. As he told Euronews, he already had the sound sorted, and sourced the visual from Brendan Fraser crying. According to TikTok's effect analytics, Crying Eyes has had more than 23 billion views and has been used in more than 7.8 million videos, making it the biggest of Ollie's TikTok effects, which have more than 32 billion views between them.
Explainers on the trend from Dexerto, Bustle and Capital all told people to use the Crying Eyes filter, and after it went viral Euronews profiled Ollie as its designer, in a piece syndicated on Yahoo News.
